‘My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute’
1. We the Living – 1936
2. Anthem – 1938
3. Atlas Shrugged – 1957
- Every Form has its own meaning. Every man creates his meaning and form and goal. Why is it so important – what others have done?
- I set my own standards. I inherit nothing. I stand at the end of no tradition. I may perhaps, stand at the beginning of one.
- You’ve made a mistake already. By asking me. By asking anyone. Never ask people. Not about your work. Don’t you know what you want? How can you stand it, not to know?
- Everything has strings leading to everything else. We’re all so tied together. We’re all in a net, the net is waiting, and we’re pushed into it by one single desire. You want a thing and its precious to you. Do you know who is standing ready to tear it out of your hands? You cant know, it may be so involved and so far away, but someone is ready and you’re afraid of them all. And you cringe and you crawl and you beg and you accept them – just so they’ll let you keep it. And look at whom you come to accept.
- I take the only desire one can really permit oneself. ‘Freedom’. To ask nothing, To expect nothing, To depend on nothing.
- I cant learn how to handle people. I cant. I don’t know how. I was born without some one particular sense. I have no organ to acquire it with. I don’t know whether its something I lack, or something extra I have that stops me. Besides, I don’t like people who have to be handled.
- A desire to choose the hardest might be a confession of weakness in itself.
- Only the nice explanations are never the true ones.
- The causes of illusions are not pretty to discover. They’re either vicious or tragic.
- Integrity is the ability to stand by an idea. That presupposes the ability to think. Thinking is something one doesn’t borrow or pawn.
- A quest for self respect is proof of its lack.
- No happy person can be quite so impervious to pain.
- That love is reverence and worship and glory and the upward glance. Not a bandage for dirty shoes. But they don’t know it. Those who speak of love most promiscuously are the ones who’ve never felt it. They make some sort of feeble stew out of sympathy, compassion, contempt and general indifference and they call it love. Once you’ve felt what it means to love as you and I know it – the total passion for the total height – you’re incapable of anything less.
- A matter of perspectives and relativity. The distance permissible between the extremes of any particular capacity is limited. The sound perception of an ant does not include thunder.
- We live in our minds, and existence is the attempt to bring that life into physical reality to state it in gesture and form.
- What you feel in the presence of a thing you admire is just one word – ‘Yes’. The affirmation, the acceptance, the sign of admittance. And that ‘Yes’ is more than an answer to one thing, it’s a kind of ‘Amen’ to life, to the earth that holds this thing, to the thought that created it, to yourself for being able to see it. But the ability to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is the essence of all ownership. Its your ownership of your own ego. Your soul, if you wish. Your soul has a single basic function – that act of valuing. ‘Yes’ or ‘No’, ‘I wish’ or ‘I do not wish’. You cant say ‘Yes’ without saying ‘I’. There’s not affirmation without the one who affirms. In the sense, everything which you grant your love is yours.
- Its easier to donate a few thousand to charity and think oneself noble than to base self respect on personal standards to personal achievement. Its simple to seek substitutes for competence – such easy substitutes : love, charm, kindness, charity. But there is not substitute for competence.
- If any man stopped and asked himself whether he’s ever held a tryly personal desire, he’d find the answer. He’d see that all his wishes, his efforts, his dreams, his ambitions are motivated by other men.
- Is sacrifice a virtue? Can a man sacrifice his integrity? His honor? His freedom? His ideal? His convictions? The honesty of his feelings? The independence of his thought? But these are a man’s supreme possessions. Anything he gives up for them is not a sacrifice but an easy bargain. They, however, are above sacrificing to any cause or consideration whatsoever. Should we not, then, stop preaching dangerous and vicious nonsense? Self Sacrifice? But it is precisely the self that cannot and must not be sacrificed. It is the unsacrificed self that we must respect in man above all.
- An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts.
- No man can give another the capacity to think. Yet that capacity is our only means of survival.
- In all proper relationships there is no sacrifice of anyone to anyone.
An agreement reached by a group of men is only a compromise or an average drawn upon many individual thoughts.
